architect: weston williamson worked as architectural consultants until tender stage. jubilee line extension project then took control of architectural design contracts until completion. reenie (karin) elliott worked as architect for jlep, and was promoted to station architect
building type+location: underground station at london bridge, south london
invisible elements:

  1. entirely subterranean, the station required the deepest excavation of the 12 new stations. technical challenges such as groundwater, proximity to river, and silty soil conditions were augmented by the difficulty of driving 4 new platform and concourse tunnels between two skyscrapers with deep foundations.
  2. 100s of ex-miners from disused pits were employed to construct the station.
  3. construction was halted by the discovery of roman and medieval buildings and artefacts, an unrecorded graveyard for prostitutes, a secret world war two bomb shelter tunnel network for 100s; and subterranean storage vaults.
  4. 20,000 commuter journeys per day catered for
  5. extensive vandalproofing tests, fire safety consultations, disabled access design, ventilation design and smoke testing, full scale platform tunnel prototypes, components testing and prototyping, lighting simulations,
  6. surrounding above ground building movement monitoring
  7. bomb threat proofing
  8. pigeon resistant and weather proof robust detailing
  9. railway signalling, passenger timetabling, data-communications, security, speaker, CCTV and signage design + consultations
  10. commercial opportunities consultations, securing revenue from backlit advertising panels, cash machines, photobooths and other concessions.
